Cephalaria are annuals or perennials that closely resemble the scabious with tall, stately stems, slender foliage and attractive flowers that display with profusion during the summer months. They take up very little space, so are fantastic at filling spaces amongst the back of your flower beds and borders. You should expect Cephalaria to grow to an approximate height of 2m (6.5’) and a spread of 60cm (24”).
Cephalaria are best grown in fertile, well-drained soil of loam, chalk, sand and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH level. They are best positioned in an area of full sun but are tolerant of part shade if necessary. They look great as part of a flower filled border, as cut flowers or within wildlife gardens.
Cephalaria are low maintenance plants, however they will require regular watering. Once flowering has finished, they should be cut back to promote future flowering for the following season. If planted in an exposed area, Cephalaria may need staking where they can be protected from adverse weather conditions.
