About Cephalanthus

Cephalanthus are unusual and intriguing deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, native to North America. A delicate globe shaped centre of tiny flowers is the base for spike-like blooms that protrude from the middle, resembling a pin cushion. These intricate flowers are highly aromatic, producing a profusion of scent and colour in summer, maturing into golden-brown ball-like fruits during the autumn. Glossy green foliage with red veins turn bronze during the autumn. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect your Cephalanthus plants to grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.8m (6’).

How to plant Cephalanthus

Cephalanthus are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand or loam within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is slightly wider but just as deep as the root ball and water thoroughly to settle the soil in place. Cephalanthus do not tolerate drought and so it is important to site your plants in a position where the soil can retain moisture. Alternatively, you may wish to position these plants close to a stream or pond. They are best positioned in an area of full sun so long as the soil is kept moist.

How to care for Cephalanthus

Cephalanthus are incredibly easy to maintain and care for, making them the perfect plant for those with limited time. They do not like to be fussed over and are resilient to conditions and soil types – just ensure that the soil is never left to dry out. It is not a necessity to prune Cephalanthus, although if it starts to look untidy you can cut it down to ground level during the early spring.

How to propagate Cephalanthus

It is possible to propagate Cephalanthus by semi-ripe cuttings or hardwood cuttings.
