Centranthus are robust and vigorous annuals or perennials with rounded clusters of delicate trumpet-shaped blooms, thick, fleshy stems and divine foliage throughout spring, summer and autumn. It is suggested that Centranthus are best suited to flower beds and borders within a cottage, informal or coastal garden setting. You should expect to see your Centranthus grow to an approximate height of 60cm (24”) and a spread of 45 (18”).
Centranthus are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, loam and chalk within an alkaline and neutral PH balance. Adding lime to the soil is highly beneficial to this plant providing a sweet treat alongside providing additional nourishment. Do not feel tempted to overly enrich the soil as it is quite happy in most locations. Centranthus are best positioned in a sheltered or exposed area of full sun.
Centranthus will require a regular watering regime during immaturity as this will aid in the development of a healthy and robust root system. As an established plant, Centranthus will become relatively drought tolerant and will require a less rigorous watering schedule. It is recommended that you deadhead spent flower heads to prolong blooming time and to retain a healthy and tidy shape. Cut Centranthus to ground level in autumn or after the flowering period if self-seeding is evident and unwanted.
