Centaurea are annuals, perennials or subshrubs with elaborate thistle-like flower-heads that resemble miniature fireworks, decorating long slender stems and clumps of grey-green foliage throughout the summer months. An interesting feature piece that would look magnificent if situated within a wildflower meadow or garden. You should expect your plants to grow to an approximate height of 40-80cm (16-32”) and a spread of 60cm (24”).
Centaurea are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. If you have poorly draining soil, you may wish to amend the planting area with plenty of grit or sand. Most varieties will benefit from a position of full sun although many will equally thrive in part shade.
Centaurea are relatively drought tolerant once established but will benefit from a thorough watering regime when experiencing prolonged periods of dry weather. However, they will thrive to optimum effect when the soil is kept moist. Established plants are incredibly independent and can tolerate a high level of neglect from watering and general maintenance. You may wish to cut back stems to where re-growth is forming after the flowering period as this will encourage repeat blooming throughout the season.
