About Cautleya

Cautleya originate from the Himalayas and are better known as architectural ‘gingers’. Large, exotic and tropical ovate leaves emerge during the spring that form dramatic looking clumps. Tall flower spikes and dark red bracts follow in time for summer. Cautleya are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. Alternatively, they will make fantastic container plants. You should expect to see Cautleya grow to an approximate height of 60cm (24”) and a spread of 45cm (18”).

How to plant Cautleya

Cautleya are best planted in well-drained soil during the spring when all signs of frost have passed. Dig a hole that is 10cm (4”) deeper than the root ball spacing them 15cm (6”) apart from companion plants. Place Cautleya gently into the planting hole and water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil and to encourage a healthy root system. They are best positioned in an area of part shade or full shade as this is where they will thrive best.

How to care for Cautleya

Cautleya will need protection from adverse weather conditions, especially when the weather becomes cold and the first sign of frost are evident. It is recommended that they are relocated to an environment such as a conservatory or a light and airy porchway. Ensure that you keep your soil relatively moist but not waterlogged and remove foliage that has completely died down.

How to propagate Cautleya

It is possible to propagate Cautleya by division during the early spring or in late spring after new growth has emerged.
