The word Campanula derives from the Latin term meaning ‘Little Bell’. The abundance of voluptuous blooms is a real spectacle as they hang on lean spiny stems. Campanula will thrive where temperatures are of a moderate level and will therefore look their best in June and July. However, if weather permits, they will prevail until as late as October. They make excellent groundcover and will grow to a height and spread of 45-60cm (18-24”).
Campanula are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, loam, chalk or sand with an alkaline or neutral PH level. To prepare your soil for planting, loosen the area with a fork and mix in a generous amount of compost. Position your plant into the hole you’ve created and make sure that the ball of the root is level with the soil surface. Ensure your Campanula is watered on a regular basis to gain the best results.
To encourage continued growth each season, make sure you apply a dusting of compost to the base of your plant, inclusive of a layer of mulch to retain the moisture levels, keeping your plant happy and healthy. As Campanula like moist soil, ensure that you water it well especially in periods of drought. When the blooms have diminished, cut back to the base, as this will prevent self-seeding.
