Camassia are bulbous perennial plants with striking star-shaped flowers and narrow linear leaves that adorn thick, majestic stems throughout spring. They make the perfect companion plants to lower growing plants and shrubs complementing any garden with undulating architecture. Camassia make a fine addition to flower beds and borders within a cottage, wildflower or informal garden setting. Camassia can grow to an approximate height of 60cm (24”) and a spread of 20cm (8”). They are native to North West America.
Camassia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. You must ensure that the soil drains well. If this is not the case amend with organic matter such as compost, ground bark or old manure to improve poorly drained sites. Plant your bulbs around 10cm 4” deep and 20cm 8” apart with the points facing upward. Water thoroughly and deeply to set the soil securely. Camassia are best positioned in full sun but will also tolerate part shade.
Once the flowering period has ceased, leave the foliage in place as this will help to strengthen the bulb for the following season. Water well during the growing season ensuring that the soil is kept moist, especially when there are periods of prolonged dry weather. By the middle of summer, the foliage may turn yellow and die back as Camassia becomes dormant – this is when you should be able to remove foliage whilst your plant rests for the winter.
