About Calamagrostis

Calamagrostis are stunning perennial grasses with tufts of leaves with tall, erect stems that hold clusters of stunning flowering panicles during the summer. They are best suited to flower borders and beds in low maintenance, informal or cottage gardens. You should expect to see Calamagrostis grow to an approximate height of 1.5m (5’) and a spread of 1m (3’).

How to plant Calamagrostis

Calamagrostis are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, chalk, sand and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Planted in a border or en masse will form a spectacular and dramatic display. Calamagrostis are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. Once established, these plants are incredibly drought tolerant.

How to care for Calamagrostis

Calamagrostis are incredibly easy to grow and are low maintenance once fully grown. Every year in February cut your plant down to the ground as this will promote healthy growth for the following year. It will also enable you to enjoy its dramatic structural presence during the winter. Keep the ground moist but well-drained throughout active growth to enhance its overall growth.

How to propagate Calamagrostis

It is possible to propagate Calamagrostis by division during the mid-spring.
