About Butomus

Butomus are rhizomatous, fully hardy aquatic perennial plants that are native to Europe and Asia, commonly known as Flowering Rush. Umbels of flowers bloom in summer above sword-shaped foliage, which are great for pollinators. Butomus are best suited to pond margins or in water as they are an aquatic plant. You should expect to see this plant grow to an approximate height of up to 1.5m (5ft) and a spread of up to 50cm (20in).

How to plant Butomus

Butomus are best planted in a poorly drained soil of sand, clay or loam within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. Can be grown in fertile mud at the edge of a pond, or in water up to 25cm (10in) deep. Butomus are best positioned in either a sheltered or exposed area of full sun. Can be grown in aquatic baskets.

How to care for Butomus

Butomus like plenty of room for their roots to be able to grow. If Butomus become pot bound they will stop flowering, so large aquatic baskets are a good option as they will not restrict their growth.

How to propagate Butomus

It is possible to propagate Butomus by seed sown as soon as it's ripe or by rhizome division in the spring.
