Where to plant Butomus

Butomus are best planted in a poorly drained soil of sand, clay or loam within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. They can be grown in fertile mud, or in water no more than 45cm (18in) deep. They are best positioned in an area that receives full sun. Butomus are well suited to being planted at pond margins or in water as they are an aquatic plant.

If growing in water, the water should be between 5-45cm (2-18in) deep. Allow plenty of room for their roots to be able to grow. Large aquatic baskets are a good option as they will not restrict growth, as Butomus will stop flowering if they become pot bound. Alternatively, they can be grown in pots with a horticultural saucer to retain moisture.
