Buddleja are evergreen or deciduous shrubs with compact yet powerfully scented perfume. Simplistic foliage is decorated lavishly by panicles of small, tubular flowers that flourish throughout spring and summer. They can survive adverse weather conditions making them an incredibly popular and versatile plant. Buddleja are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage and wildlife gardens. Their height and spread will differ depending on their variety although they will generally grow to an approximate height and spread of 2 metres (6.5’)
Buddleja are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, loosen the soil with a fork and mix in a generous amount of compost, digging a hole that is twice the diameter of the root ball so that is it kept level with the soil surface. Space companion plants 1.5-3m (5-10’) apart to allow room for your plants mature size. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil in place.
Keep the soil moist throughout active growth and check that the soil is consistently well-draining. Once established, Buddleja can be cut back to ground during early spring. Remove all spent flower heads when necessary, as this will encourage an abundance of fresh blooms in the following season.
