About Bouteloua

Bouteloua are clump-forming deciduous or perennial grasses that display long, slender leaves and long clusters of dense flower spikes in dark purple-brown or cream during summer. They can tolerate harsh, dry conditions and are best suited to flower beds and borders within a wildflower or prairie meadow or cottage garden style. You should expect to see your Bouteloua grow to an approximate height and spread of between 30-60cm (1-2).

How to plant Bouteloua

Bouteloua are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. After establishment this grass tolerates extreme cold and thrives even when exposed to grazing.

How to care for Bouteloua

Bouteloua are extremely drought tolerant but long-term drought may cause browning and temporary dormancy until moisture becomes available. Do not overwater as these plants prefer drier, well-drained soil but provide adequate moisture in periods of drought. Cut back old foliage to the ground during late winter.

How to propagate Bouteloua

It is possible to propagate Bouteloua by seed.
