Bouteloua are best planted in a well-drained soil or sand, clay, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. Bouteloua are well suited to being planted in flower beds and borders within a prairie or cottage garden style as well as wildflower meadows.

Amend soil with compost before planting to improve drainage.
Do not overwater these plants as they prefer drier, well-drained soil but provide adequate moisture during periods of drought. Cut back old foliage to the ground during late winter.
