About Boltonia

Boltonia are herbaceous perennial plants with countless clusters of star-shaped blooms that showcase bright yellow centres and subtle white, pink or purple coloured petals. Blue or grey-green feathery foliage support tall, slender stems from late summer to late autumn. Boltonia are best suited to flower beds and borders within cottage, informal and wildflower meadows. You should expect to see Boltonia grow to an approximate height of 90cm-2m (3-6.5’).

How to plant Boltonia

Boltonia are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, chalk, sand and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Boltonia will thrive best when positioned in full sun if kept sheltered from intense midday heat. When positioned in part shade, they tend to droop and will require staking to encourage healthy development and growth structure.

How to care for Boltonia

Some varieties of Boltonia require staking especially if positioned in exposed areas that are prone to high winds. You may also wish to pinch back your plants so that they look bushier and more compact. Throughout active growth, you should ensure that the soil is kept moist and well-watered, especially during periods of drought.

How to propagate Boltonia

It is possible to propagate Boltonia by division during the spring every two to four years to maintain vigour.
