About Blechnum

Blechnum are mostly evergreen ferns with attractive leathery rib-like fronds that form into erect spires coated in lush shades of green. They are best suited to flower beds and borders or used as underplanted for larger shrubs or trees. You should expect Blechnum to grow to an approximate height and spread of between 10-50cm (4-20”).

How to plant Blechnum

Blechnum are best planted in either poorly drained or moist, well-drained soil of loam or clay within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Blechnum thrive in a position or part or full shade. Once planted, apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture levels whilst suppressing pesky weeds.

How to care for Blechnum

Blechnum can withstand temperatures usually down to -5 degrees centigrade but for only short periods of time. Make sure you provide additional protection or move to a suitable spot during periods of extreme cold. If the trunk does appear to die back over the winter, leave in place as usually new growth will form from the old trunk.

How to propagate Blechnum

It is possible to propagate Blechnum by division during the spring.
