About Billardiera

Billardiera are unique and unusual evergreen shrubs exuding delicious scent and dazzling fruit. The compact bell-shaped yellow and green flowers will transform into purple tinged blooms in the summer time. This is then followed by electric blue and purple fruits, brightening up autumnal days, leading into winter. These fruits are safe to eat, once the seeds are removed and can be taken straight from the vine, perfect for a winter salad. Billardiera are native to Australia and can grow to a height of 2m (6.5’).

How to plant Billardiera

Billardiera are happy planted in borders and containers, or can be grown upon a trellis or over shrubs. They prefer well-drained soil that is humus rich and of an acidic or neutral PH level, located in a partly sheltered site to encourage optimum health.

How to care for Billardiera

It is important to water your plants regularly. Once Billardiera are well-established, they will require a reduced watering schedule until periods of dry weather. If not watered appropriately before maturity, it may affect the rate and quality at which it is likely to grow. In times of intense heat or frost, apply a layer of mulch to the root for extra protection. Pruning can be undertaken in the spring, although this should only be undertaken to improve the overall quality and appearance of the plant.

How to propagate Billardiera

It is possible to propagate Billardiera by seed in the spring or by stem cuttings in the summer or autumn.
