About Bergenia

Bergenia are evergreen, perennial plants that are native to Russia where large plumes of leathery foliage that are attached to stately, thick stems. Displayed upon these impressive stems are dense clusters of bell-shaped blooms of pink or white shades that flourish during the spring. They are best suited to banks, slopes, flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see your Bergenia grow to an approximate height of 30cm (12”) and a spread of 40cm (16”).

How to plant Bergenia

Bergenia are best suited to moist, well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, you may wish to amend the soil with a generous layer of compost as this shall enhance the nutritional value of the planting area. They should be placed at a depth that matches the root ball and 30cm (12”) apart from companion plants. They need to be positioned in a site that attracts full sun or part shade

How to care for Bergenia

During early winter, you should apply a generous layer of compost to the base of your Bergenia to enhance nutritional value. Protect Bergenia from colder conditions by adding a dry mulch consisting of straw or chopped leaves to protect your plant from repetitive freezing and thawing. Tidy your plant during the winter by removing old, dead or diseased foliage and trim back to a desirable shape.

How to propagate Bergenia

It is possible to propagate Bergenia by division during autumn or spring.
