Athyrium are clump-forming deciduous ferns with lush and attractive erect or creeping fronds. They are best suited to flower beds or borders within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Athyrium grow to an approximate height and spread of 1 metre (3’).
Athyrium are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, sand or clay within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Enrich your native soil with a generous amount of compost. Ferns generally do not need fertilizer, with most being fertilizer sensitive. Plant the roots at the same depth as the root ball and water well once in position. Plant in an area of full shade or part shade to get the best results.
Your Athyrium will start emerging once the soil warms up. You will generally not need to provide extra water while your plants are dormant. Once they have sprouted they enjoy being watered a few times a week or more, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering.
