About Astrantia

Astrantia are shade loving herbaceous perennials with long, wiry stems, palmately lobed foliage and compact clusters of firework-like flowers that are produced in a wide range of colours, including white, pink and deep red. The flowers are tightly packed florets surrounded by bracts which act as petals. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Astrantia grow to an approximate height of 70-90cm (28-36”) and a spread of 45cm (18”).

How to plant Astrantia

Astrantia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Choose an appropriate site for your plants, preferably in a position of part shade. Amend the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter and mix thoroughly to the native soil. When planting, make sure all signs of the root are below the soil level and water well to settle into place.

How to care for Astrantia

Astrantia should not be left to dry out and must be kept regularly watered, especially during periods of drought. For the best results, apply a top dressing of organic matter or balanced fertiliser during spring or autumn to improve the overall growing conditions. Deadhead spent flower heads to encourage a second flush of flowering.

How to propagate Astrantia

It is possible to propagate Astrantia by division or by seed.
