Astrantia are best planted in a moist but well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of part shade. Astrantia are well suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard and informal garden settings. They are also great in wildlife gardens as the flowers are attractive to pollinators.

Amend the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter and mix thoroughly into the native soil. When planting, make sure all signs of the root are below the soil level and water well to settle into place.

Astrantia should be kept watered regularly and not left to dry out, particularly during periods of drought. For best results, apply a top dressing or organic matter or balanced fertiliser in spring or autumn to improve growing conditions. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage a second flush of flowers.
