Astelia are best planted in a moist but well-drained soil of clay or loam. Asplenium are best planted in a moist but well-drained soil. They are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun or part shade with protection from wind and adverse weather conditions. Astelia are well suited to architectural or courtyard style gardens.

Incorporate a thick layer of leaf mould mulch and mix in well to the native soil. Remove any debris around the base of the planting area.
Provide protection during the winter months as these plants do not cope well during frosty and cold conditions. Do not overwater at this will cause the roots to rot.
It is possible to propagate Astelia by division in spring or by seed sown in containers.
