About Astelia

Astelia are evergreen perennials with slender, sword-shaped arching leaves etched with attractive silvery and pale green stripes. Clusters of pale green or brown flowers can be seen during the summer and on female plants are often followed by orange or red berries. They are best planted in an architectural or courtyard garden. You should expect to see Astelia grow to an approximate height of 1.5m (5’) and a spread of 1m (3’).

How to plant Astelia

Astelia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay and loam. At the time of planting, incorporate a thick layer of leaf mould mulch and mix in well to the native soil. Position in an area of full sun or part shade, removing any debris around the base of the planting area and ensure that they are in a sheltered position, protected from wind and other adverse weather conditions.

How to care for Astelia

Provide adequate protection during the winter months as Astelia do not cope well during frosty, cold conditions. Do not over water Astelia as this will cause the roots to rot.

How to propagate Astelia

It is possible to propagate Astelia by division during the spring or by seed sown in containers.
