Asplenium are evergreen ferns with short, upright stems that bear leathery and glossy foliage. They are the perfect accompaniment beneath trees or in borders, creating sought after textures and shapes. You should expect Asplenium to grow to an approximate height and spread of between 40 and 60cm (1.3-2’).
Asplenium thrive in drier climates with plenty of sunshine, although they are tolerant of dappled shade. They need to be planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, loam, sand or chalk variety in alkaline or neutral PH levels. In the wild, these ferns are often seen within crevices in rocks or stone walls and will require little compost and fertilisation. Asplenium can be planted in compact areas, but will grow to a smaller height and spread.
It is recommended to protect your plant from intense mid-day sun as the leaves may scorch, so ensure there is some shelter available. Ensure that you water Asplenium regularly during its first season and mulch well in cold periods.
It is possible to propagate Asplenium by sowing the spores during the mid to latter part of summer. Alternatively you can propagate by division in the spring time. You can take off peeled leaf bases where the stem joins up with the root. You can pot and raise new plants using the green swellings of this plant.
