About Arbutus

Arbutus are evergreen trees and shrubs with compact, bell-shaped white or pink blooms with brightly coloured strawberry like fruits that flourish during the autumn. These flowers and fruits are set upon dark waxy leaves, providing an exotic visual effect. This shrub can grow to a height and spread of between 2.5-4m (8’-13’) and make a fantastic addition to courtyard gardens in pots and containers.

How to plant Arbutus

Arbutus are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, sand or clay within an acidic or neutral PH balance. You may wish to amend the planting area with plenty of organic matter, mixing thoroughly to improve the overall drainage. Dig a hole that is the same depth and triple the width of the root ball to accommodate the mature size of your shrub or tree and back fill, watering well. They are best positioned in an area of full sun.

How to care for Arbutus

It is important to water Arbutus regularly during active growth, ensuring not to overwater or waterlog the planting area. You may wish to regularly apply organic fertiliser to this shrub to encourage optimum growth. Lightly prune your shrub or tree during late spring or early summer, ensuring you are not pruning back any forming fruit, as they tend to mature during the autumnal months.

How to propagate Arbutus

It is possible to propagate Arbutus by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer or by seed sown in the autumn.
