About Arabis

Arabis are annuals or evergreen perennials, commonly referred to as ‘rock cress’. They are usually mat-forming and are a great source for groundcover. Simple yet stunning foliage embellishes gorgeous white pink or purple flowers during the spring. Arabis are best suited to a gravel or rock garden in beds and borders or in containers. You should expect to see Arabis grow to an approximate height of 10cm (4”) and a spread of 50cm (20”).

How to plant Arabis

Arabis are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance during either the spring or the autumn. These plants prefer to be grown in a sunny position but will tolerate part shade if necessary. Water well once planted to settle the soil into place.

How to care for Arabis

Arabis are low maintenance plants and are easy to care for. It does tend to spread and so keep an eye on this if you wish to retain a neat and/or restricted shape. There is no need to cut Arabis back as perennials are mostly evergreen and so it is nice to keep the colour throughout the colder months. Remove wilted or faded flowers to retain a tidy appearance.

How to propagate Arabis

It is possible to propagate Arabis by softwood cuttings.
