About Angelica

Angelica are large biennials or herbaceous perennial plants that are closely related to the carrot family. They can be used in cooking as a salad garnish or crystallised for cake decorations. Branched thick stems bear impressive umbels of tiny flowers, creating canopy-like blooms during late summer and autumn. Rich and palmately lobed foliage act as a substantial plinth for these beautiful and intriguing plants. Angelica look particularly attractive in flower beds and borders within a cottage or informal garden style. You should expect to see Angelica grow to an approximate height of 2.4m (8’) and a spread of 1m (3’).

How to plant Angelica

Angelica are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam or clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Angelica appreciate a large planting hole to provide plentiful room for growth so take care when positioning companion plants. For best results, position Angelica in a sheltered area of full sun or part shade to protect it from intense heat.

How to care for Angelica

Angelica can be short lived and therefore it is recommended that you remove the flower heads before seeding. This should extend the life of your plant. Maintain a regular watering schedule, keeping soil moderately moist at-all-times. Apply a layer of mulch if kept in exposed areas or if left in dry conditions – this will also add vital nutrients to the soil whilst suppressing weeds.

How to propagate Angelica

It is possible to propagate Angelica by seed sown in a cold frame.
