Anethum are annuals or biennials with an upright habit, creating linear mounds of plumy foliage, topped with umbels of small, delicate and textured yellow blooms throughout summer. Most Anethum release an aniseed-like fragrance, making it the perfect addition to flower beds and borders beside pathways where the scent can be relished. Alternatively, they are a great feature as part of a bouquet or cut flower arrangement. You should expect to see Anethum grow to an approximate height of 90cm (36”) and a spread of 30cm (12”).
Anethum are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, sand and chalk within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. You may wish to amend heavy soils with a generous application of organic matter as this will improve drainage and growing conditions. Anethum are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun, where they are protected from strong winds and adverse weather conditions. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice the width of your Anethum, spreading the roots out before settling into place. Space companion plants 30cm (12”) apart to allow sufficient room for plants to spread as they mature. After planting, water thoroughly and deeply.
Water Anethum freely throughout active growth and sustained periods of dry weather. Stake varieties that are exposed to adverse weather to retain a healthy structure. Anethum may need protection from cold weather conditions and therefore it is vital to transplant them or use protective wrapping when temperatures dramatically fall.
