About Andromeda

Andromeda are small evergreen shrubs that fashion intriguing blue-green foliage that are made up of narrow, leathery leaves and decorated by clusters of pale pink blooms from late spring to early summer. The optimum height and spread of Andromeda is approximately 20cm (8”) making it a subtle and unimposing plant within your borders and containers. This shrub will spread creating depth to your beds and borders whilst acting as effective weed suppressing ground cover – the perfect addition to wildlife, cottage and informal garden settings.

How to plant Andromeda

Andromeda are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, clay and sand. The best planting position for your shrub is in a sheltered position of full sun, part shade or full shade. Generally, Andromeda thrive in acidic conditions and tend to be best suited near a rock pool or pond. Water Andromeda after planting and ensure it has plenty of moisture whilst it is still young.

How to care for Andromeda

Apply an 8-10cm (3-4”) layer of pine needles or oak leaves to retain moisture levels. Feed Andromeda with a 4-3-4 granular fertiliser in early April to maintain healthy growth and development, continuing to do this when necessary during active growth. Make sure fertiliser does not encounter stems or foliage as this may cause inadvertent damage.

How to propagate Andromeda

It is possible to propagate your Andromeda by softwood cuttings or by layering.
