Akebia are stunning, vigorous and semi-evergreen climbing shrubs originating from China, Korea and Japan. Akebia produce attractive palmate foliage and cup-shaped flowers that often release mesmerising and spicy scents. These are often followed by large fruits if cross-pollinated by another clone. They are best suited to wall-side borders in cottage or informal garden settings. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height of 10m (33') and a spread of 6m (20’).
Akebia are best planted in moist, fertile and well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline and neutral PH balance. Akebia should be planted when all signs of frost have passed positioning them in a site that will accommodate their size at maturity. Amend the soil with organic matter and mix thoroughly. Akebia will progress well in a sheltered position of full sun although they will equally tolerate part shade.
Prune Akebia once flowering has finished when you feel they have outgrown their existing space. During active growth, these climbers will require regular watering even though they are considered drought tolerant. Feed with an all-purpose fertiliser to encourage a profuse expanse of blooms and foliage with even better colour.
