About Ajuga

Ajuga are rhizomatous evergreen perennials with an often-spreading habit. Foliage colour will differ between varieties but generally are vibrant and often iridescent. Two-lipped flowers form attractive spikes of flowers throughout spring and summer. They are native to Europe, Iran and south west Asia. Ajuga are best suited to banks and slopes where they can spread, flower beds and borders within a wildflower or wildlife meadow. You should expect Ajuga to grow to an approximate height of 50cm (20”) and a spread of 1m (40”).

How to plant Ajuga

Ajuga are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Overall colour of the stunning foliage is at its best when sited in part shade. The biggest concern is to make sure the plant doesn't get too wet because crown rot is a common problem. Plant Ajuga 30cm (12”) apart, taking care not to plant too deeply. The crown should never be covered with soil or the plant will rot and die.

How to care for Ajuga

Ajuga are an incredibly low maintenance plant. Once your plant is fully established, cut the foliage back to the ground if necessary. Every 2-4 years it may be necessary to thin out any crowded clusters of foliage. This will reduce any chances of root rot.

How to propagate Ajuga

It is possible to propagate Ajuga by division.
