  Where to plant

Where to plant Agapanthus

Agapanthus are best planted in a moist but well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in full sun. As they prefer their roots to be restricted, they make great pot plants. They are also well suited to growing in borders.

Place the plant into the hole do that the top of the root is 5cm below the top of the soil. Fill the remaining space with a loam-based compost with additional grit. Firm the soil and avoid leaving air pockets. Water plants thoroughly and deeply after planting. When planting in heavy soils, place grit or crockery at the bottom of the hole to aid drainage.

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser in the weeks before flowering. Do not overfeed as they will stop flowering. Remove flower heads after flowering unless the seed is required for propagation. Apply a dry mulch in winter especially in cold areas, removing the straw or sand before the active growth period.

How to propagate Agapanthus

It is possible to propagate agapanthus by division in spring. Divide into clumps with several growing points. Division is recommended no more than every 4- 6 years. Over division will reduce flowering.
