Originating from Asia, Actinidia are striking deciduous climbers that can grow to a mature height and spread of between 4-8 metres (13-26’). They form simple yet stunning heart-shaped leaves with some varieties bearing beautiful pink and cream tips or variegated patterns. Small flowers are often followed by voluptuous edible fruits. Actinidia look exquisite climbing up walls and trees, and although grown predominantly for their foliage and fruits, sensational perfumed scents are released when the flowers bloom in late spring, early summer.(6’).
Actinidia are best planted in well-drained soil of loam, sand and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH level. Plant Actinidia along wall-side borders to utilise the best possible features of your stunning climber plant. To gain maximum pleasure from Actinidia, keep in a warm sheltered area positioned in full sun, as this will create beautifully scented and coloured blooms.
In the springtime remove any entwined, diseased or crowded stems to ensure your Actinidia looks at its best, encouraging optimum health and development. During the dry days of summer, Actinidia will require regular watering, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. As Actinidia grow, you may need to supply a support or stake to train your climber into a desirable position.
You can propagate Actinidia from a variety of different methods. This can be accomplished by seed in the spring and autumn or by semi-ripe cuttings in mid summer. Alternatively, you can propagate by layering in the winter.
