About Abutilon

Abutilon are evergreen or deciduous shrubs, trees, perennials or annuals that are native to the tropics and sub-tropics of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia. Large yet simple leaves decorate delicate stems with bell or bowl-shaped flowers, looking much like a hot air balloon with a striking and intriguing downward facing stamen. Abutilon are best suited to flower beds, borders and containers within an informal garden setting. You should expect your shrubs or trees to grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.8m (6’).

How to plant Abutilon

Abutilon are best planted in well-drained soil of loam and sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Abutilon will require plenty of room to grow and so please take care when choosing an appropriate site. To create a vertical structure, you may wish to use a support in which to train your plant against walls, fences and other features. Abutilon are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun.

How to care for Abutilon

As Abutilon are vigorous growers, prune back long stems as this will retain a compact and bushy shape. Once established, feed fortnightly with a balanced water soluble fertiliser as this will promote an abundance of flowering. Abutilon will require regular watering during active growth although will not tolerate waterlogging. Water sparingly during the winter.

How to propagate Abutilon

It is possible to propagate Abutilon by seed in the spring or by softwood cuttings.
