About Abelia

Abelia are deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees that form part of the Honeysuckle family and are native to eastern Asia and Mexico. Stunning clusters of trumpet-shaped blooms are encased with an umbrella of colourful sepals which are held high above exquisite glossy foliage and dark, arching, slender stems throughout summer and autumn. They are best suited to low maintenance wall side borders and courtyard gardens. You should expect to see your Abelia grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.2m (4’).

How to plant Abelia

Abelia should be planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH soil type. Choose a site that will accommodate the mature size of your plant and dig a hole that is wide and deep enough for the root ball. Water thoroughly and deeply once settled into place. Abelia will fully flourish if they are positioned in an area of full sun as this is where flowers will grow with profusion and density.

How to care for Abelia

Abelia will need protection from prolonged hard frosts so ensure you cover your plant in fleece from late Autumn. This can be removed by spring to prevent your shrubs from sweating. Provide Abelia with a mulch made up of organic matter in the autumn. There should be little need to provide your shrub with any additional feed as a good mulch will be sufficient. To control the shape of your Abelia, you may wish to trim your plant once it has flowered. This will maintain a healthy appearance whilst encouraging further growth for the following season. Now is the time to remove dead or damaged wood.

How to propagate Abelia

It is possible to propagate Abelia by softwood cuttings during early summer or by hardwood cuttings in late summer.
