Weigela are a genus of shrubs within the Diervillaceae family, native to Eastern Asia. The genus is said to have been named after Christian Ehrenfried Weigel, a German scientist (1748-1831). The first species to be collected for Western gardens, Weigela florida, distributed in North China, Korea and Manchuria, was found by Robert Fortune and imported to England in 1845. The British Weigela national collection is held at Sheffield Botanical Gardens; along with the national collection of the closely related Diervilla genus. The German Weigela national collection, Sichtungsgarten Weigela, is in Buckow, Maerkische-Schweiz.
Weigela are abundant deciduous shrubs with attractive pale-green, ovate leaves and clusters of funnel-shaped blooms, subtly coloured in shades of white, yellow, pink or red, that display in abundance throughout spring and summer. Weigela are the perfect compact shrub for those with limited space, tucking in nicely between companion plants in flower beds and borders within an informal garden setting.
