Vinca are a genus within the Apocynaceae family, native to Europe, west Africa and southwest Asia. They are most commonly referred to as Periwinkle. They date back to as far as the Roman period where Pliny the Elder described the creeping nature of the plant. As Vinca’s were distributed across Europe, they became a symbol of love between a husband and wife due to the twining nature of the plants. In medieval Europe, Vinca’s were widely used for decorative purposes for the burial of children.
Vinca are evergreen sub-shrubs or perennials with gorgeous star-shaped blooms that produce a mass of ground hugging foliage from spring through to autumn.
