Veronicastrum are a genus in the Plantaginaceae (or plantain) family, native to North America where Veronicastrum virginicum grows natively. Veronicastrum has a common name of Culver's Root, named after Dr.Culver, a physician who used the roots of the plant for their strong laxative effects in the 18th century.
Veronicastrum are herbaceuous perennials, much like a larger Veronica. Tall, leafy stems hold racemes of white, purple, blue or pink flowers from summer into autumn. They are best planted in beds or at the back of a sunny to partially shaded border.
