Valeriana

History and Origin:

Valeriana is a perennial flowering plant within the family Caprifoliaceae and is native to Europe and Asia. The name Valeriana comes from the Latin word 'valere', meaning to be strong and healthy. Valerian root extract is known to have sedative and anti-anxiety effects and is used in some medications to promote sleep, however its effectiveness is disputed.

About:

Valeriana can be annuals, evergreen shrubs or herbaceous perennials with simple leaves and clusters of small white pink or yellow flowers that bloom in summer. They are well-suited to a wildflower or cottage gardening style and are suitable for coastal gardens.
