Sambucus are a genus within the Adoxaceae family, native to the Northern Hemisphere. They are more commonly known as the ‘elderberry’. In some myths, the elder tree is thought to repel evil spirits and witches. If an elder tree was cut down, the Elder Mother was thought to take her revenge.
Sambucus are herbaceous perennials or deciduous shrubs and small trees. Displayed on stunning ovate or pinnate foliage are clusters of small creamy-white flowers that are followed by red, white or black berries.
