Roscoea is a genus of flowering plants within the Zingiberaceae (Ginger) family, native to China. The genus name was given by English botanist James Edward Smith in 1806. This was in honour of his close friend William Roscoe, the founder of the Liverpool Botanic Garden. William Roscoe had been interested in plants within this family and had grown many varieties himself.
Roscoea are tuberous perennial plants with lance shaped leaves and impressive flower heads, much like that of an orchid.
