Pomegranates originate from a region that extends from Iran to northern India. Today they are widely cultivated for their fruits and have become increaingly popular in western supermarkets.
Pomegranates are decidious, bushy shrubs which have bright flowers that bloom in summer. These flowers are then followed by red-brown fruits that, when open, reveal juicy seeds on the inside that are edible. Pomegranate seeds are often eaten as they are but the fruits are also used in juices, smoothies, baking and cooking. Here in the UK, they are best suited to being planted in a container on a sunny patio.
