Podophyllum

History and Origin:

Podophyllum are a genus of plants within the Berberidaceae family, native to eastern USA and south eastern Canada. They are commonly referred to as ‘Mayapple’, ‘American Mandrake’, ‘Wild Mandrake’ or ‘Ground Lemon’. The genus was first described by Swedish botanist, Carl Linnaeus in 1753.

About:

Podophyllum are rhizomatous perennials with intriguing foliage, often produced in varying shapes and sizes, however all thick and textured, with prominent veins and mottled shades of greens, yellows and browns. Flowers will follow in summer by cup or bell-shaped flowers, along with red or yellow fruit. Podophyllum are best suited to flower beds and borders within an architectural, courtyard and cottage garden setting. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 10-50cm (4-20”).
