Phaseolus is a genus within the Fabaceae family, native to the Americas. The generic name was given by Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist in 1753. The name was taken from the Latin combination of phaselus and the diminutive suffix -olus, that was in turn borrowed from the Greek word for cowpea or kidney bean.
Phaseolus are annual herbaceous plants that are related to the legume and bean family, native to central and south America. Unique and intriguing snail-like flowers are flecked with vibrant colour throughout the summer. Large, dark green foliage support these fascinating flowers where cylindrical fruits often follow once your blooms fade. Phaseolus are best suited to flower beds, borders or containers within a cottage or informal garden setting.
