Persicaria is a genus of around 150 species of herbaceous flowering plants within the knotweed family Polygonaceae and can be found growing throughout the world. The name Persicaria originates from the Latin name persica which means peach and refers to a particular genus of Persicaria which has leaves that look like the leaves of a peach tree.
Persicaria can be annuals, herbaceous or evergreen perennials or sub-shrubs with small pink or white bell-shaped flowers and simple leaves. They are well-suited to planting in borders and beds and suit either a cottage garden or a wildflower meadow.
