Magnolia is a genus of approximately 200 species within the Magnoliaceae family. They were named by the famous Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1737, in honour of French botanist Pierre Magnol. Magnolias are one of the earliest plants known to have developed in evolutionary history. Fossil finds have denoted that magnolias were once growing in Europe, Asia and North America over 100 million years ago.
Magnolia are evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs with distinctive and often fragrant flowers with stunning sword-shaped foliage. Some Magnolia varieties are often followed by colourful cone-like fruits that will provide an additional interest when the flowers have faded. They are suited to most garden styles including courtyard, cottage and informal within both flower beds and borders.
