Jasmine is a genus of approximately 200 species, native to mild temperate regions of Europe, Asia and Australia. The genus is made up of different vines and shrubs within the Oleaceae family. The name ‘Jasmine’ is derived from the Persian term ‘Yasameen’ or ‘Yasmin’ and means ‘Gift from God’. Common Jasmine shrubs are also known as the poet’s jasmine due to their sweet, floral scent. Jasmine has been grown for centuries as an ornamental plant and has been particularly popular in China, Japan and Southeast Asia.
Jasmine are climbing vines and shrubs with glossy green foliage and modest, star-shaped flowers which are often followed by dark fruits. Jasmine flowers are often and commonly enjoyed in China as a tea, sometimes combined with green tea or black tea.
