Halesia are a genus within the Styracaceae family, native to eastern Asia. They are commonly referred to as ‘silverbells’ or ‘snowdrop trees’. The genus was named after Stephen Hales by John Ellis, publishing the name in the tenth edition of Linnaeus's Systema Naturae in 1759.
Halesia are deciduous shrubs or small trees with ovate leaves and white, pendant or bell-shaped blooms. The flowers are often followed by decorative winged fruits during the autumn.
