Grevillea are a genus within the Proteaceae, native to Australia. They are commonly referred to as the ‘spider flower’ or ‘toothbrush plant’. The genus was first discovered by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander on Lieutenant James Cook's first voyage (1768-1771) to Australia. In 1772, Banks was appointed director of the Royal Gardens at Kew and in 1773 was elected President of the Royal Society, a position he held until his death in June 1820.
Grevillea are evergreen shrubs or trees with simple yet stunning knitting-needle-like foliage and clusters of unusually shaped petal-less, spidery blooms throughout the winter.
