Ensete are a genus of plants within the Musaceae (banana) family, native to tropical areas of Asia and Africa. This genus was first described in 1862. It was not commonly known until 1947 when the first edition of papers were created in the Kew Bulletin.
Ensete are evergreen perennial plants with gorgeous thick but short stems, with elaborate foliage etched in fine veins of dark green, burgundy or black. Terminal clusters of cup-shaped flowers emerge, followed by dry banana-like fruits. They are best suited to wall side borders or as container plants within an architectural, city, courtyard or tropical garden. You can expect to see Ensete grow to an approximate height and spread of 2.5-4m (8-13’).
