Echium are a genus within the Boraginaceae family, native to North Africa and mainland Europe. The latin name is derived from the Greek word ekhis meaning viper which is partly used when referring to its common name Vipers Bugloss as the forking at the end of each flower resembles a viper’s tongue.
Echium are annuals, biennials or evergreen perennials or shrubs that are native to the canaries. They fashion textured pipe shaped blooms which stand in dense spikes upon simple furry leaves. These plants provide architectural beauty and are a delight when placed in flower beds and borders within cottage and informal gardens.
