Deschampsia is a genus of plants within the Poaceae family, commonly known as hair grass or tussock grass. The genus is widespread across many countries. The genus is named in honour of the 18th/19th century French physician and naturalist Louis Auguste Deschamps.
Deschampsia are deciduous or evergreen, tufted grasses with linear or thread-like leaves and open flowering panicles that flourish during summer. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within a courtyard, coastal or cottage garden setting. You should expect to see Deschampsia grow to an approximate height of 1.5 metres (5’) and a spread of 1 metre (3’).
