Delphiniums are a genus that is made up of around 300+ species within the Ranunculaceae family. They are native to many areas within the northern hemisphere and have been found in rugged, mountainous regions of Africa. It is thought that Delphiniums were named after the Delphi temple – a monumental building that was erected in the honour of Apollo, the Greek god of the sun. It was in Tudor Britain where Delphiniums were commonly referred to as ‘Larkspur’ as the nectary closely resembles a lark’s claw.
Delphinium are perennials, annuals or biennial plants. Although there are some differences to note within various varieties, most will develop a profusion of colourful bowl-shaped blooms that fix to tall, towering stems. The foliage is often palmately lobed, creating a thick and bushy appearance. Plant together in clumps for the most dramatic effect at the back of a border.
