Davidia are a genus of plants within the Nyssaceae family, native to south central and southwest China. They are commonly referred to as the ‘Dove tree’, ‘Handkerchief tree’ or the ‘Ghost tree’. The genus has been named after a French Vincentian missionary, Armand David (1826-1900).
Davidia are medium sized deciduous trees with attractive ovate foliage, embellished by clusters of modest green flowers in spring and greenish-brown fruits during the autumn. Davidia are best suited to low maintenance, courtyard, or informal gardens. You should expect to see Davidia grow to an approximate height of 12m+ (40’+) and a spread of 8m (26’).
