History and Origin:

Darmera is a genus within the Saxifragaceae family. It is most commonly known as Indian Rhubarb or the Umbrella Plant, native to mountainous woodlands within western America. The genus name was given in honour of Karl Darmer, a 19th century German horticulturist.

Darmera are vigorous perennial plants that form an extensive clump of large rounded leaves and generous clusters of star-shaped, white or pink flowers held on tall stems. Darmera are best suited to flower beds and borders within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Darmera grow to an approximate height of 1.5 metres (5’) and a spread of 1 metre (3’).
